Drive precision for all - SOMATOM Drive with Dual Source technology

2018-01-29

In today’s medical climate, as you face pressures from multiple fronts, it’s more critical than ever to ensure your CT imaging is precise and efficient with minimal discomfort to the patient. The SOMATOM Drive with new generation Dual Source technology, equipped with the new Straton MX Sigma X-ray tubes and Sigma generators, achieves this delicate balance and sets a new industry benchmark with its high-performance in pediatrics, cardiology, oncology, and emergency medicine.

The SOMATOM Drive CT system’s superior new tin filter and low-voltage capabilities allow high quality imaging at lower doses of contrast and radiation, minimizing the need for follow-up care, sedation or other preparatory measures. Additionally, its adjustable voltages mean doses can be tailored to each patient and reduce radiation exposure. This makes it an elegant option for more sensitive patients, including pediatric and geriatric patients, and those who are seriously ill or have reduced kidney function.

A 63-year-old male was referred for Dual Source CT scans after presenting with severe joint pain and tenderness along with limited movement in the joints. The resulting diagnosis uncovered substantial build-up of uric acid gouty tophii / crystals, showing gout at the lateral and posterior margins of the acromion process of scapula and at the scapular blade. Subtle erosive changes were also detected.

The diagnosis of gout can be complex, particularly in acute cases, such as when an aspiration cannot be performed. What’s more, the uric acid concentration in the blood isn’t always a reliable indicator. Despite these challenges, the Dual Source CT scanner exceled by quickly, noninvasively, and accurately visualizing uric acid crystals. Compared to conventional examinations, it delivers superior images at equal or even lower dose levels. This exceptional performance can eliminate the need for a painful and stressful examination.
