How to save energy with your imaging equipment
Healthcare consumes energy. Because every action to preserve resources counts, we create new possibilities in a world of limited resources.
We are committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and to helping you reach your targets for sustainability in radiology with our products and services. Below you will find a range of energy saving guides for various imaging systems, e.g. more sustainable CT and reduced MRI electricity consumption, as well as real-life examples of how resource preservation can make a big difference on our joint journey towards green medical imaging.

Reducing the need for helium
About a quarter of the helium consumed worldwide is used for the extreme cooling of superconducting magnets, and demand is on the rise. Because helium is such a rare resource on Earth, it makes sense to use it economically.
While conventional MRI scanners can require over 1,000 liters of liquid helium for cooling1, new technologies limit the mass of parts that need to be heavily cooled to a minimum, reducing the amount of liquid helium required to less than one liter.2
Avoiding the need for helium not only conserves valuable environmental resources. New technologies are also easier and cheaper to install than is usually the case for a conventional MRI system.
Our highlight solutions
MAGNETOM Flow. Platform
MAGNETOM Flow. Platform3 is the anticipated pioneering 1.5T MRI platform that will empower you with a game-changing new flow for sustainable, AI-powered and helium-independent4 MRI. Designed to be our first fully scalable platform, it is planned to deliver unmatched workflow simplicity, patient comfort and AI-enhanced imaging.
Green imaging in MRI
We provide technological solutions for MRI energy consumption that reduce the ecological footprint of MRI and contribute to a more sustainable future in healthcare.

Optimizing sustainable radiology
Research at University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, has identified numerous ways of making imaging more sustainable in radiology. We work closely with Professor Elmar Merkle, Head of the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Department, regarding energy consumption in medical imaging.
Reimagining radiology
Healthcare accounts for nearly 5% of global CO2 emissions. The advanced technology used in radiology departments is especially energy-intensive, with MRI systems consuming the most energy. Our latest generation MRI scanners are equipped with a “power save” mode, a novel feature that decreases power use by up to 28% when compared to “off” mode. We've partnered with University of California San Francisco to turn the vision of achieving the first carbon-neutral radiology service into reality.
