Unveiling Coastal Reality: 447.5 Kilograms of Trash Removed in 90 Minutes
The area we focused on was located slightly away, requiring a 15-minute trek from the main beach. This beach location, dubbed “off Kelanang Beach," bears sights of local fish and a beautiful sandy beach often used for picnics and wedding photo shoots
However, what we saw was a dose of reality: the local environment facing threats from washed-up waste, plastics clad and tarpaulins deeply entrenched in the sand, and the usual litter that marries the beauty of this pristine coastline!
Undeterred by the sight (and the obvious challenge), our dedicated volunteers, over the next 90 minutes, diligently collected, sorted, and loaded about 447.5 kilograms of trash onto the waiting truck.
Here is the raw breakdown of what we hauled in:
- General Waste: 85 kg
- Plastic: 138.8 kg
- Glass: 20.2 kg
- Tin/Metal: 3.5 kg
- Large items: 200 kg
“We appreciate the opportunity to get together and do something so meaningful! Not only did we haul 400+ kg of rubbish from the beach, but we also learned that our daily habits matter because we are part of the ecosystem, part of the ‘problem'.”
Beyond Clean-up: Fostering Change and Teamwork for a Sustainable Future
We owe our gratitude to My Clean Beach for suggesting Off Pantai Kelanang for our community service efforts. While well-known beaches often receive the spotlight, there are countless lesser-visited gems along the coast that deserve attention, especially those off the main beach areas that hide beautiful local fauna.
As we celebrate this mini outcome, we acknowledge that this is merely the beginning. No grand promises, just a genuine push for more eco-friendly initiatives. We aim to be part of the solution, working towards a sustainable future. 🌱💙
Special thanks to our video partner, Nusantara Visual, who actively participated in the clean-up and documented the entire activity. Check out the video they produced, capturing the essence of our commitment to a cleaner, healthier planet!
