Originally scheduled to be held in Hamburg, Germany, the 34th Annual Congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) took place virtually October 20-23, 2021. EANM’s Congress Chair Stefano Fanti stated “The EANM Congress was a great success! Despite the difficult days we are all facing due to the pandemic, it was amazing to see that our specialization is continuing to develop rapidly.”
The virtual meeting drew more than 2,800 participants from over 100 countries. Featuring a well-rounded scientific program and continuing medical and technologist education sessions, the Congress offered robust educational opportunities for the nuclear medicine industry, as well as shared the latest methods and case reports, with the goal of improving patient outcomes around the globe. “The EANM has been able to present great innovations with equipment, diagnostic tracers, and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. The field of nuclear medicine keeps on growing!” remarked Fanti.
With nearly 1,200 contributors, 440 e-posters, 270 recordings, 200 sessions, 60 exhibitors, and 15 symposiums, the event showcased content designed to keep all professionals in the field of nuclear medicine up to date in the rapidly
evolving field. New this year was the Highlights Session where Irene Burger, MD, of Switzerland and Nathalie
Albert, MD, of Germany used the first plenary session to call attention to select sessions and abstracts.

34th EANM Congress recognizes nuclear medicine leaders
EANM Young Authors Award, an award given to encourage younger nuclear medicine practitioners to become more involved in the community; and the EANM Technologists’ Award, given to technologists’ research papers.
Establishing molecular imaging for tomorrow, with technology of today
Siemens Healthineers, an EANM corporate member, hosted an interactive virtual booth welcoming more than 800 visitors as they explored the utilization of artificial intelligence in molecular imaging, theranostics, PETNET Solutions, PET/CT, and SPECT/ CT. In addition to showcasing the company’s latest innovations, visitors to the booth were invited to experience intelligent imaging and learn about Varian RT solutions.
Siemens Healthineers sponsored an industry satellite symposium entitled “Establishing Molecular Imaging for Tomorrow, With Technology of Today” on Thursday, October 21. This year’s symposium featured Alexander Haug, MD, PhD, of Austria who presented on radiomics and genomics, and Alban Bailliez, MD, PhD, and Dimitri Bellevre, MD, both of France, continued the discussion with a presentation on the quantification of myocardial 99Tc-HMDP uptake in patients with transthyretive-related cardiac amyloidosis. Concluding this year’s symposium, Bruce Spottiswoode, PhD, and Carl von Gall, MD, both of Siemens Healthineers, discussed integrated intelligence in molecular imaging.
EANM Congress 2021 virtual platform a success
Despite the challenges posed by hosting the conference during a global pandemic, EANM’s virtual platform provided the ideal opportunity for the nuclear medicine community to highlight new technologies, explore innovations in patient care, and participate in conversations with thought leaders. The virtual nature of the congress also allowed individuals who may not have been able to travel in previous years to attend the event.
If you were unable to participate in this year’s EANM’s Congress, you can view all the scientific content on demand through December 31, 2021.
Mark your calendars for the 35th Annual EANM Congress, which is scheduled to take place in person October 15-19, 2022, in Barcelona, Spain.
