Reducing the need for helium
About a quarter of the helium consumed worldwide is used for the extreme cooling of superconducting magnets, and demand is on the rise. Because helium is such a rare resource on Earth, it makes sense to use it economically.
While conventional MRI scanners can require over 1,000 liters of liquid helium for cooling1, new technologies limit the mass of parts that need to be heavily cooled to a minimum, reducing the amount of liquid helium required to less than one liter.2
Avoiding the need for helium not only conserves valuable environmental resources. New technologies are also easier and cheaper to install than is usually the case for a conventional MRI system.
