Da Nang, a coastal city in Vietnam, experienced historic and unprecedented flooding due to the impact of the Storm Son Ca in October 2022.

The devasting floods, deluged several dwellings, and displaced many people from their homes, causing extensive damage throughout the city that severely impacted the lives of the local communities.

The floods also had a significant impact on the provision of healthcare services in the city. The injuries, loss of lives and damage to medical facilities and equipment further exacerbated the already-strained healthcare system.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the Customer Services team at Siemens Healthineers carved out a plan of action to rehabilitate these hospitals and minimize damage to their medical equipment.

On the night of the incident, the team in Vietnam set-up a taskforce to evaluate the situation and formed a special emergency assistance program to support affected customers in the region. A group of four customer service engineers, two each from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, flew to Da Nang to support the engineers who were already present in the city.

"It was not an easy decision to send additional engineers to Da Nang under the precarious weather conditions. However, our priority was to support our customers in Da Nang because without the right medical equipment, they wouldn't have been able to provide the necessary treatment to their patients," said Nguyen Manh Thi, Head of Customer Services, Siemens Healthineers Vietnam.

The team worked tirelessly to ensure that the hospitals received the necessary support to restore equipment for the hospitals to resume treatment of those affected by the floods.

“As one of the engineers present onsite, we recovered many machines that had drowned in water, which presented the possibility of severe defects to the equipment. We carefully cleaned and dried the systems, performed troubleshooting, and conducted quality assurance tests to make sure that the equipment could be up and ready to operate again,” said Phung Van Thao, Customer Service Engineer, Siemens Healthineers Vietnam.

The Customer Services team was able to restore and minimize damage to several imaging systems that were impacted due to the flooding in Da Nang, These extraordinary efforts to go above and beyond have been recognized by Da Nang Oncology Hospital, Cam Le District Hospital, Lien Chieu District Hospital, and Da Nang General Hospital. This is one of many examples of how Siemens Healthineers with its team of highly passionate and dedicated employees reinforces its commitment to make healthcare accessible to the local communities in Vietnam.
