Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer Screening in the Community

Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK. Around 48,500 people are diagnosed in the UK each year1

Treating late-stage lung cancer is extremely challenging. However, lung cancer treatment can be significantly more effective if the disease is detected earlier in stage I or II, before the onset of symptoms when the disease is still localised.

Targeting those most at risk of lung cancer, NHS England's Targeted Lung Health Check (TLHC) programme contributes to the ambition of the NHS long term plan to improve early diagnosis and survival for those diagnosed with cancer. The programme will work with initially ten projects, but then expand to other Integrated Care Boards across England to deliver the programme. It is expected that this programme will run nationally, covering all areas of England from 2024 onwards2

Launched in 2018, over 1,750 people have been diagnosed with lung cancer through the programme, with 76% caught at stages one and two3.
