Allied Veterinary Laboratories Relies on ADVIA Hematology System for Multispecies Veterinary Lab Testing

Anita Kiehl
Need for fast turnaround time

One of the toughest challenges in veterinary lab testing is turnaround time. Referring independent veterinarians, who often have sick patients waiting, request extremely fast results. For its CBC program, AVL uses the ADVIA hematology system for canine and feline testing. The system’s turnaround time is a critical component to building ongoing relationships with referring independent veterinarians.

"The ADVIA system enables us to turn samples around in the time the vets want without necessarily doing a manual differential recheck," says Anita Kiehl, Medical Director, DVM, MS, DACVP, AVL. “This can allow us to get some additional speed.”

The ADVIA Hematology System
  • Automates hematology workflow without the need for large track-based systems or reflexive testing on normal samples.
  • Maximizes efficiency through user-defined screen configurations and reports.
  • Simplifies maintenance with Unifluidics™ Technology through reduced fluidics, elimination of pinch valves, and automated daily cleaning.

Kristan Muir
A high level of accuracy and reliability

With a number of referring independent veterinarians—and their patients—waiting for results, AVL needs a hematology analyzer it can count on to deliver.

“The ADVIA is a good workhorse that gets results for us. It’s reliable. You can’t afford to make mistakes when you have an animal's health on the line,” says Kiehl. “We follow a set of quality control standards where we periodically double check a sample manually against the ADVIA's differential and HCT results. It’s proven to be very accurate for fresh samples.”

According to Kristan Muir, Technical Supervisor at AVL, “The system also gives us the ability to run stat samples, which is very important when a doctor is calling because the animal is critical. We can stop the analyzer, run that stat, and then pick up right where we left off. The ADVIA has allowed us to gain the trust of our independent veterinarians."
