Biomarkers and Sepsis: New Tools May Aid Early Diagnosis and Treatment

Thank you for your interest in our AACC Workshop "Biomarkers and Sepsis: New Tools May Aid Early Diagnosis and Treatment"

Summary: Sepsis is a leading cause of death worldwide, with bacterial infection accounting for the majority of cases. Progression from a systemic inflammatory response to septic shock is associated with increased mortality and can occur rapidly. The often nonspecific nature of symptoms can confound an early diagnosis and may delay critical intervention. Biomarkers such as procalcitonin may aid in early identification and support the decision to treat. This workshop discusses the growing burden of sepsis and reviews evidence for the potential role of biomarkers, as well as bacterial identification and resistance testing in the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis.
