CT TAVR Planning

TAVR as an alternative to invasive AVR1

Patients with aortic stenosis often suffer from several co-morbidities, from which renal insufficiency is a prominent one. These patients are denied surgery and may undergo a minimally invasive replacement of the aortic valve, known as trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVR).

Features & Benefits

Pre-procedural planning is essential

Crucial for a successful TAVR procedure is an accurate pre-procedural planning based on which the access path for the catheter and the device type and size can be determined.

SOMATOM Definition Flash and syngo.via
A powerful solution for safer TAVR procedures

With its Flash Spiral the SOMATOM Definition Flash allows to acquire the relevant anatomy in a single scan.
The key to successful planning is a reliable assessment of the aorta. With syngo.via’s  syngo.CT Cardiac Function a streamlined and accurate assessment of all parameters is now possible in one dedicated workflow.

Single-scan acquisition with the SOMATOM Definition Flash

With its high-pitch spiral the SOMATOM Definition Flash allows to acquire the aortic root, aorta and iliac arteries in a single scan and with one contrast injection only. A pitch value of 3.2 yields scan times of less than 2 s for a scan range of up to 65 cm. Due to the short scan time the amount of contrast agent may potentially be reduced.

Customer experience

At Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby, Denmark, several TAVI procedures are performed each month. The regular use of the Flash Spiral helps to keep contrast agent dose low.

Valve Pilot

CT TAVR Planning for accurate assessment of all parameters

The CT Cardio-Vascular Engine offers a dedicated workflow for CT TAVR Planning. As an optional extension syngo.CT Cardiac Function – Valve Pilot helps save time as well as making your planning results more precise. Together they allow for:

  • single-click localization and quantification of the smallest iliac diameter
  • visualization and subtraction of aortic calcifications based on single energy data
  • easy assessment of the curvature of the aortic arch
  • straightforward evaluation of LVOT, sinotubular junction etc.
  • automatic calculation of corresponding C-Arm angulation for a given projection
  • zero-click display and zero-delay quantitative assessment of the aortic annulus
  • calculation of annulus short and long axis as well as effective diameters as the case is opened
  • two ostia views for a faster assessment of their distance to the annulus plane

Customer experience

The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg performs roughly 10-15 TAVR procedures a month. Here, the workflow CT TAVR Planning brings more efficiency into clinical routine.

CT TAVR Planning

Automated transfer of C-Arm calculated angulation

As part of the CT TAVR Planning workflow the application syngo.CT Cardiac Function automatically calculates the corresponding C-arm angulation for a given projection. Once the optimal projection is determined the angulation may be transferred directly to the cath lab to help save time.
