Clinicians are challenged not only by the prevalence of thrombotic disease with its estimated annual incidence of one in 1,000 people, but by the broad range of disorders that can be responsible for it. To complicate diagnosis further, nearly 75% of outpatients presenting with signs and symptoms suggestive of deep vein thrombosis do not actually have the disease. Ultimately the prompt and accurate assessment of thrombotic risk requires a reliable diagnostic approach that is determined by considering various factors such as a patient’s medical history.1
