Siemens Healthineers has won a DesignEuropa Award for its robot-supported Artis pheno angiography system. The company was one of the finalists in the “Industry” category. The DesignEuropa Awards are organized by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), a decentralized EU agency based in Alicante, Spain. The award celebrates excellence in product design and intellectual property rights management. The DesignEuropa Awards were presented at the Polin Conference Center in Warsaw on November 27, 2018.

“Protection of intellectual property enjoys a high priority in our company,” says Markus Simon, Head of Intellectual Property, Siemens Healthineers. “We protect our innovation base, consisting of inventions, designs, and trademarks, by making use of all different kinds of statutory IP rights at a very early stage when developing our products and services.”

Artis pheno is an angiography system with a C-arm that is controlled by a robot arm. It is used in minimally invasive surgery, interventional radiology and interventional cardiology. The DesignEuropa jury recognized the consistent design language of the product, as well as its overall construction, both of which are aligned with patient needs. The design of the Artis pheno gives medical staff the best possible patient access during treatment, supports the fight against infections, and improves patient safety.

“The patient’s constitution and weight, and also positional requirements, can make medical intervention difficult, or even render it impossible,” says Peter Seitz, General Manager Surgery, Siemens Healthineers. “Artis pheno was developed especially to treat all patients and thus improve the standard of healthcare. The challenge in designing this powerful system partly involved meeting functional, clinical requirements, hygiene and safety requirements in particular. Its appearance also had to generate confidence in both the user and the patient. I believe we did a very good job.”

The design of the Artis pheno was developed in collaboration with at-design GbR.
