Die Siemens-Healthineers-Mitarbeiterin Dr. Christina Triantafyllou ist für die Entwicklung des ersten für die klinische Anwendung zugelassenen Ultra-Hochfeld-Magnetresonanztomographen (MRT) Magnetom Terra gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Arnd Dörfler, Leiter der Neuroradiologischen Abteilung am Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, und Prof. Dr. Mark E. Ladd, dem Leiter der Abteilung für Medizinische Physik in der Radiologie des Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrums in Heidelberg, als eines von drei Wissenschaftler-Teams für den Deutschen Zukunftspreis nominiert worden. Der Preis des Bundespräsidenten ist eine der höchsten deutschen Auszeichnungen für Technik und Innovation.
Das Team um Christina Triantafyllou, die bei Siemens Healthineers für Ultra-Hochfeld-MRT-Lösungen verantwortlich ist, hat gemeinsam mit den Magnetresonanz-Experten des Unternehmens und weiteren Kollaborationspartnern dafür gesorgt, dass die zuvor nur in der Grundlagenforschung eingesetzte Magnetfeldstärke von 7 Tesla seit dem Jahr 2017 klinischen Anwendern als neue, wirkungsvolle Diagnosemethode zur Verfügung steht. Die Nominierten haben damit einen Durchbruch für die Präzisionsmedizin erzielt, der unmittelbar den Patienten zu Gute kommt. Denn mit der exakten Darstellung selbst kleinster Strukturen von bis zu 0,2 Millimetern bietet Magnetom Terra neue Chancen für die frühzeitige Diagnose und personalisierte Therapie insbesondere von neurologischen Erkrankungen wie Multipler Sklerose (MS), Epilepsie und Morbus Parkinson. Der Deutsche Zukunftspreis wird am 27. November 2019 von Bundespräsident Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin verliehen.

Frühzeitige Diagnose, effektive Behandlung
Gerade im Frühstadium von MS und neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen wie Demenz und Morbus Parkinson sind krankhafte Veränderungen häufig noch nicht so stark ausgeprägt, um sie mit den klinisch etablierten MRT-Systemen bei geringeren Feldstärken diagnostizieren zu können. Bis zu Diagnose und Therapiebeginn vergeht daher oft wertvolle Zeit. Die Ultra-Hochfeld-MRT des Magnetom Terra von Siemens Healthineers zeichnet sich dagegen durch einen sehr hohen Detailgrad in der Bildgebung aus und erreicht damit die Darstellung kleinster Veränderungen in der Anatomie und sogar in der Funktion von Organen. So kann die innovative metabolische Bildgebungstechnologie krankhafte Veränderungen auf Stoffwechselebene sichtbar machen, die in der anatomischen Bildgebung gar nicht zu sehen sind.
Die Feldstärke von 7 Tesla, die etwa dem 140.000-fachen des Erdmagnetfeldes entspricht, zeigt dabei beeindruckende Erfolge: Während es bei MS bislang nur im fortgeschrittenen Stadium möglich war, die krankhaften Veränderungen auf den klinischen Bildern zu erkennen, können diese bei 7 Tesla bereits in der Frühphase erkannt werden. Gerade bei den meist jungen MS-Patienten sind die frühzeitige Diagnose und der schnelle Therapiebeginn von großer Bedeutung, um eine spätere Behinderung zu verzögern oder ganz zu verhindern. Auch bei Epilepsie, einer der häufigsten neurologischen Erkrankungen mit rund einer halben Million Patienten allein in Deutschland, trägt die überragende Detailauflösung des Magnetom Terra dazu bei, Epilepsieherde präziser erkennen und diagnostizieren zu können. So können chirurgische Eingriffe präziser geplant werden und die Betroffenen ihre ursprüngliche Lebensqualität oftmals zurückgewinnen. Neben neurologischen Fragestellungen lassen sich mit Magnetom Terra aber auch muskuloskelettale Erkrankungen klinisch beurteilen. Der Einsatz von Magnetom Terra in weiteren klinischen Anwendungsgebieten wie der Prostatabildgebung wird gerade erprobt.
Für Magnetom Terra wurde eigens ein neuartiger aktiv abgeschirmter Magnet entwickelt, der bei höherer Leistungsfähigkeit nur halb so schwer ist wie die Magnete der bisherigen Forschungssysteme. Magnetom Terra kann dadurch leichter transportiert und einfacher in die bestehende Infrastruktur der Krankenhäuser integriert werden. Eine weitere Innovation stellt die Dual-Mode-Funktionalität dar, die es den Nutzern des Magnetom Terra ermöglicht, unmittelbar zwischen klinischer Nutzung und Forschungsanwendung zu wechseln. Damit bietet das System die ideale Plattform für eine translationale Forschung – neueste Forschungsergebnisse können den Patienten zeitnah zu Gute kommen. Zahlreiche Installationen in führenden Kliniken rund um den Globus lassen erwarten, dass sich die 7-Tesla-Bildgebung mittelfristig in allen großen akademischen Krankenhäusern etablieren wird.
Erfolgreiches Zusammenwirken von Industrie und Wissenschaft, von Physik und Medizin
Die Physikerin Christina Triantafyllou, Ph.D., war bei Siemens Healthineers eine treibende Kraft hinter der Entwicklung des Magnetom Terra, mit dem die technischen Voraussetzungen für die klinische Anwendung der 7-Tesla-Bildgebung geschaffen wurden. Prof. Dr. sc. techn. Mark E. Ladd, leitender Physiker am Deutschen Krebsforschungszentrum in Heidelberg, hat führend mitgewirkt, als in den 2000er Jahren die ersten 7-Tesla-MRT-Systeme für Forschungszwecke am Universitätsklinikum Essen sowie in Heidelberg installiert wurden. Seither hat er wesentliche Beiträge zur Weiterentwicklung der 7-Tesla-Bildgebung geleistet. Der Radiologe und Neuroradiologe Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Arnd Dörfler war bereits in der Entwicklungsphase des neuen Systems eingebunden. Insbesondere bei der klinischen Implementierung und Validierung des weltweit ersten für den klinischen Betrieb vorgesehenen 7-Tesla-MRT-Scanners am Universitätsklinikum Erlangen sowie der Zulassung des Magnetom Terra spielte er eine wesentliche Rolle.
Der Deutsche Zukunftspreis wurde 1997 vom damaligen Bundespräsidenten Prof. Dr. Roman Herzog ins Leben gerufen und gilt seither als Symbol für die wissenschaftliche Leistungsfähigkeit und Innovationskraft Deutschlands. Zu den wichtigsten Auswahlkriterien der Jury gehören, neben der Forschungsleistung, auch die Patent- und Marktfähigkeit der Entwicklung. Siemens-Mitarbeiter erhielten die mit 250.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung bereits in den Jahren 2004, 2005, 2007 und 2012.
